i quit my job in the beginning of 2010 so that i could move abroad. so i left new york and chose berlin because i loved the city more & more with each visit. this is a chronicle of my experience getting there and, hopefully, getting by there. Freies Neukölln, Weserstr, Berlin-Neukölln. Gentrification in Berlin’s former problem borrough. The Creative Class marches in and the founders of the first szene-pub in this corner feel unwell, guilty and overrunned. That’s why this speech on their own account is necessary, long overdue and probably still too friendly.
i don’t know whether to feel guilty because i’m in a way part of the problem…or to feel that i can identify more with the narrator’s point of view because i’ve already gone through this in nyc many times, which leads me to try my best not to be part of the problem.
i’d like to think the latter is true.
