i didn’t find a place where i wanted to live today, but i did realise where i don’t want to live, which is nearly as good as figuring out where i want to live. so i think this is the plan:
- pick a place that is perhaps less than desirable for as little time as possible until the right spot opens up
- act now to secure the right spot for twelve months
so what’s the right place for right now? here are a few quick shots…i’m not including the ones that make it look like it’s a country home - because that’s how it’s furnished. but i swear, the area is cooler than that. there’s an anarchist hang out across the street. it’s legit. and there’s a pullout couch in the living room for those interested.
if you had the unfortunate opportunity to see yesterday’s post about a relatively sweet looking apartment located near to all three of these - the U5 (which will eventually take me straight to work), an anarchists’ hangout, and my language classes - don’t get too excited. word from the realtor this AM is that it has been rented out through june. this happened yesterday - even though i spoke with them on friday saying i wanted it.
this morning’s email accompanied the same listings i didn’t want yesterday, though there was one new one. same zip code (10245) but further away, not on the same U-bahn line, etc etc etc. but i think i’ll take it. it’ll be a 20min walk to class now, so maybe this will speed up my bike purchasing process.
i’m not even there yet though. i just want a place to live.
OK - so, with all of the excitement of the füchse match over the weekend, never gave an update on the living situation.
i have a place. it’s located in the borough of friedrichshain-kreuzberg, but really it’s in just friedrichshain. there’s plenty of bars, restaurants, cafes, graffiti, punks, students, immigrants…whatever you want, it’s pretty much here. unless you’re looking for posh - in which case go someplace else. this is the neighborhood i’ve stayed in the last couple of times i’ve visited here and i really like it for all of the reasons above.
as far as convenience of my place in particular: there are two supermarkets on the corner - one of which is a «bio» or organic market; the U5 is a block away - this train conveniently goes to alexanderplatz, which is where the TBWA office is; language school is 5mins away by foot. riding a bike to alexanderplatz is a straight shot down frankfurter allee/karl-marx-allee.
i’m only booked here for five months, but i think i might stay…we shall see.
*please note* i did not decorate this place. so don’t make too much fun.
taken from the balcony of the new flat on KMA. i noticed the sunset as i left the office and rushed to stop off at the empty apartment just so i could capture this…
